۞ AND, INDEED, long before [the time of Moses] We vouchsafed unto Abraham his consciousness of what is right; and We were aware of [what moved] him 51 Recall, when he said to his father and his people: "What are these images to which you are devoutly clinging?" 52 They replied: 'We found our fathers worshipping them' 53 He said: Certainly you have been, (both) you and your fathers, in manifest error. 54 They exclaimed, "Have you brought the Truth or are you joking?" 55 Abraham replied, "Your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, who created them, and I bear witness to that. 56 By the Lord, I will devise a plan against your deities after you have gone away and turned your backs!" 57 So he smashed them up to pieces with the exception of the biggest, so that they may turn to it. 58 They said: Who hath done this to our gods? Surely it must be some evil-doer. 59 They said, "We heard a youth talk of them: He is called Abraham." 60 They said: "Then bring him before the eyes of the people, that they may testify." 61 They said, "Art thou the one that did this with our gods, O Abraham?" 62 He answered: "Rather it was this supreme one who has done it. So ask them, if they can speak." 63 Then they turned to one another and said, "It is you yourselves who are in the wrong," 64 With their heads cast down they said, "Abraham, you know that idols do not speak. How then can you ask such a question?" 65 He said: Worship ye then instead of Allah that which cannot profit you at all, nor harm you? 66 "Fie upon you, and upon the things that ye worship besides Allah! Have ye no sense?".. 67 They said: "Burn him, and save your gods, if you are men of action." 68 Allah said, "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham." 69 and whereas they sought to do evil unto him, We caused them to suffer the greatest loss: 70 And We delivered him and Lut to the land wherein We had placed Our blessings for the worlds. 71 We granted him Isaac and Jacob as a gift and helped both of them to become righteous people. 72 And We made them leaders who guide by Our command, and We sent them the divine revelation to do good deeds and to keep the prayer established and to give charity; and they used to worship Us. 73 And to Lot We gave judgement and knowledge, and We saved him from the city that was committing wicked deeds. Indeed, they were a people of evil, defiantly disobedient. 74 And We admitted him to Our Mercy, truly, he was of the righteous. 75
