The tribe of Ad rejected the Messengers. 123 when their brother Hud said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 124 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 125 So keep your duty to Allah and obey me. 126 I ask no recompense of you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 127 "Do ye build a landmark on every high place to amuse yourselves? 128 And you make strong fortresses that perhaps you may 129 And when you lay hands (on men) you lay hands (like) tyrants; 130 "Be, then, conscious of God and pay heed unto me: 131 Have fear of the One who has bestowed upon you all that you know. 132 amply provided you with flocks, and children, 133 And orchards and springs. 134 "Truly I fear for you the Penalty of a Great Day." 135 They replied: "It is all the same for us whether you admonish us or not. 136 This is naught but a custom of the ancients; 137 And we shall not be doomed. 138 So they belied him, so We destroyed them. Surely, in that there is a sign; yet most of them do not believe. 139 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 140
