The tribe of Ad rejected the Messengers. 123 Recall, when their brother Hud said to them: "Have you no fear? 124 Surely I am a faithful apostle to you; 125 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 126 For this I ask of you no wage, for my wage falls only on the Lord of the Worlds. 127 What, you build a monument on every hill merely for fun 128 Erect palaces (thinking) that you will live for ever, 129 And when you strike, you strike as tyrants. 130 So fear Allah and obey me. 131 And fear Him Who hath aided you with that which ye know. 132 He has given you cattle, children, 133 “And with gardens and water-springs.” 134 Verily I fear for you the torment of a Mighty Day. 135 They said: It is all one to us whether thou preachest or art not of those who preach; 136 “This is nothing but the tradition of former people.” 137 And we shall not be doomed. 138 So they cried him lies; then We destroyed them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 139 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 140
