[AND the tribe of] Ad gave the lie to [one of God's] message-bearers 123 Their brother Hud asked them, "Why do you not have fear of God? 124 "Verily! I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 125 so fear you God, and obey you me. 126 For this I ask of you no wage, for my wage falls only on the Lord of the Worlds. 127 “What! You build a structure on every height, to laugh at the passers-by?” 128 And take ye for yourselves castles that haply ye may abide. 129 “And when you apprehend someone, you seize him mercilessly?” 130 So fear Allah, and obey me. 131 Fear Him who has bestowed on you what you know, 132 He has given you abundance of cattle and children 133 "And Gardens and Springs. 134 "Verily, I fear for you the torment of a Great Day." 135 They said: "It is the same to us if you warn us or do not warn. 136 This [religion of ours] is none other than that to which our forebears clung, 137 and we are not going to be chastised [for adhering to it]!" 138 And so they gave him the lie: and thereupon We destroyed them. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 139 Yet surely your Lord is mighty and merciful. 140
