Thamood, belied their Messengers. 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds. 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 and cornfields and date-palms laden with juicy fruits? 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 Do not cause her to suffer lest you become subject to the torment of the great day (of Judgment)." 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
