The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 “Those who spread turmoil in the earth, and do no reform.” 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day. 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 159
