The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 Therefor keep your duty to Allah and obey me, 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 “You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful.” 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 “And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you.” 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
