The Thamud tribe denied the Noble Messengers. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 “And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?” 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 and do not follow the biddings of those that go to excesses 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 You are a mere mortal like us. Show us a miracle if you are telling the Truth". 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 Do not cause her to suffer lest you become subject to the torment of the great day (of Judgment)." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
