The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih (Saleh) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 Within gardens and springs 147 sown fields and palmtrees, with slender spathes. 148 "And you carve houses out of mountains with great skill. 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
