The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 Surely I am a faithful apostle to you 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 “And you carve out dwellings in the mountains, with skill?” 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They replied, "Surely you are bewitched. 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
