Samood gave the lie to the apostles 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 143 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 And dwellings hewed out of mountains ingeniously? 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 And touch her not with ill, lest there take hold of you the torment of a Mighty Day. 156 They slew the she-camel, but later became regretful 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 159
