Thamud denied the messengers 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 They said, “You are under a magic spell.” 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 “And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you.” 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. 159
