[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 Behold, their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear (Allah)? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 Within gardens and springs 147 “And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?” 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 150 and do not follow the biddings of those that go to excesses 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They replied: 'Surely, you are one of those bewitched. 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they hamstrung her, then regretted; 157 But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
