[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 I am a trustworthy Messengers sent to you. 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 I do not ask any recompense of you for this. My reward is due from none but the Lord of all the worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 In gardens and watersprings. 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
