The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 And dwellings hewed out of mountains ingeniously? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 They replied: 'Surely, you are one of those bewitched. 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
