The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 142 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 “Will you be left peacefully in these favours over here?” 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 “Those who spread turmoil in the earth, and do no reform.” 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
