Samood gave the lie to the apostles 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 Therefor keep your duty to Allah and obey me, 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 They replied: 'Surely, you are one of those bewitched. 153 Thou art but a mortal like us. So bring some token if thou art of the truthful. 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
