The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 “And you carve out dwellings in the mountains, with skill?” 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 You are a mere mortal like us. Show us a miracle if you are telling the Truth". 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 and the punishment seized them. Surely, in that there is a sign. Yet most of them do not believe. 158 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 159
