The Romans (Al-Room)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Alif Lam Mim. 1 The Greeks have been vanquished 2 In a nearer land; and they, after the overcoming of them, shall soon overcome. 3 within a few years: [for] with God rests all power of decision, first and last. And on that day will the believers [too, have cause to] rejoice 4 With the help of Allah; He helps whom He pleases; and He is the Mighty, the Merciful; 5 It is a promise of God; and God does not go back on His promise. Yet most men do not understand: 6 They know only the outside appearance of the life of the world (i.e. the matters of their livelihood, like irrigating or sowing or reaping, etc.), and they are heedless of the Hereafter. 7 Have they not pondered upon themselves? Allah created not the heavens and the earth, and that which is between them, save with truth and for a destined end. But truly many of mankind are disbelievers in the meeting with their Lord. 8 Have they not travelled through the land to see how terrible was the end of the people who lived before them. The people who lived before them were stronger than them in might, in tilling, and in developing the earth. Our Messengers came to them with clear miracles. God did not do an injustice to them but they wronged themselves. 9 Then evil was the end of those who did evil, because they rejected the communications of Allah and used to mock them. 10
