The Romans (Al-Room)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ ALIF LAM MIM. 1 The Byzantians have been overcome. 2 In the neighbouring land. But having been conquered they will conquer 3 Within a few years. Allah's is the command before and after; and on that day the believers shall rejoice, 4 in God's succour: [for] He gives succour to whomever He wills, since He alone is almighty, a dispenser of grace. 5 It is a promise of God; and God does not go back on His promise. Yet most men do not understand: 6 they know but the outer surface of this world's life, whereas of the ultimate things they are utterly unaware. 7 Do they not contemplate within themselves? Allah has not created the heavens and the earth and what is between them except in truth and for a specified term. And indeed, many of the people, in [the matter of] the meeting with their Lord, are disbelievers. 8 Have they, then, never journeyed about the earth and beheld what happened in the end to those [deniers of the truth] who lived before their time? Greater were they in power than they are; and they left a stronger impact on the earth, and built it up even better than these [are doing]; and to them [too] came their apostles with all evidence of the truth: and so, [when they rejected the truth and thereupon perished,] it was not God who wronged them, but it was they who had wronged themselves. 9 Then evil was the end of those who did evil, because they belied the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, Messengers, etc.) of Allah and made mock of them. 10
