۞ (Then will the command be given): “Muster all the wrong-doers and their spouses and the deities whom they used to serve 22 Other than God," (the angels will be told), "then show them the way to Hell, 23 and detain them there; they will be called to account. 24 "What is the matter with you that you do not help each other?" 25 No indeed; but today they resign themselves in submission 26 and advance one upon another, asking each other questions. 27 Some [of them] will say: "Behold, you were wont to approach us [deceptively] from the right!" 28 [To which] the others will reply: "Nay, you yourselves were bereft of all faith! 29 And we had over you no authority, but ye were a people exorbitant. 30 So the word of our Lord has come into effect upon us; indeed, we will taste [punishment]. 31 We mislead you and we ourselves had also gone astray." 32 On that Day they will all share the punishment: 33 This is how We deal with the guilty. 34 They were the ones, who on being told, "God is only One," become puffed-up with pride 35 And to say: What! shall we indeed give up our gods for the sake of a mad poet? 36 No, indeed, he has brought the truth, and confirmed the Messengers. 37 Indeed, you [disbelievers] will be tasters of the painful punishment, 38 And be rewarded but only for what you had done, 39 Except the chosen creatures of God, 40 Those will have a provision determined - 41 Fruits, and they shall be highly honored, 42 In gardens of pleasure, 43 On thrones, facing each other. 44 a cup from a spring being passed round to them, 45 delicious to those who drink it 46 Neither dulling the senses nor intoxicating, 47 And with them are those of modest gaze, with lovely eyes, 48 As if they were eggs, safely hidden. 49 They advance one upon another, asking each other questions. 50 A speaker of them saith: Lo! I had a comrade 51 Who used to say: "Are you among those who believe (in resurrection after death). 52 "'When we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed receive rewards and punishments?'" 53 And he will reply: 'Are you looking down (into Hell)' 54 and then he looks and sees that [companion of his] in the midst of the blazing fire, 55 He will say, "By Allah, you almost ruined me. 56 “And were it not for the munificence of my Lord, I too would have been seized and brought forth (captive)!” 57 Then, are we not to die 58 "Except our first death, and that we shall not be punished?" 59 This is indeed the mighty triumph, 60 It is for the like of this that all should strive. 61 Is this better as an entertainment or the tree of Zaqqum? 62 Which We have reserved as punishment for evil-doers? 63 (Zaqqum) is a tree which grows from the deepest part of hell, 64 and its fruits are like devils' heads. 65 They will eat from it and fill their bellies with it; 66 And behold, above all this they will be confounded with burning despair! 67 And afterward, lo! their return is surely unto hell. 68 They had indeed found their forefathers astray. 69 So they hastily follow their footsteps! 70 So had many an earlier people gone astray, 71 although, verily, We had sent warners unto them: 72 Then see the nature of the consequence for those warned, 73 Other than the chosen creatures of God. 74
