We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his nobles. He said, "I am the messenger of the Lord of the Universe," 46 Yet when he brought forth Clear Signs from Us, then lo, they burst into laughter. 47 (Even though) each miracle that We showed them was greater than the other. So We seized them with chastisement so that they may turn back. 48 And they said, 'Sorcerer, pray to thy Lord for us by the covenant He has made with thee, and surely we shall be right-guided.' 49 When We relieved them from the torment they suddenly turned back on their heels. 50 And Pharaoh issued a call to his people, saying: "O my people! Does not the dominion over Egypt belong to me, since all these running waters flow at my feet? Can you not, then, see [that I am your lord supreme]? 51 "Am I not better than this (Moses), who is a contemptible wretch and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 Why have no armlets of gold been given him, or angels sent down successively with him' 53 Thus did he make fools of his people, and they obeyed him: truly were they a people rebellious (against Allah). 54 So, when they had angered Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all together; 55 and We made them a thing past, and We appointed them for an example to later folk. 56
