Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
HA MIM. 1 By the luminious Book. 2 We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; 3 On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] 4 an order from Us. We are ever sending. 5 as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure – We will indeed take revenge. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, 18 And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." 21 Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. 22 We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. 23 “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” 24 How many were the gardens, springs, 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 And comfort wherein they were amused. 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; 29
