Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha Mim! 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 On which all affairs are sorted out and decided 4 by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 15 The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure – We will indeed take revenge. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority, 19 "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 "And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned." 24 They left how many gardens and fountains, 25 And cornfields and noble places! 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; 29
