Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha-Mim. 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - 3 on that night every wise decree is specified 4 by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. 7 La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. 8 Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! 13 but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 and the life of ease in which they took delight! 27 Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people. 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
