Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
HA MIM. 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 By a command from Us – indeed it is We Who send. 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 Covering the people; this is a painful torment. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. 12 How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 We now remove the punishment for some days – so you will again commit the same. 15 The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. 16 ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” 24 They left how many gardens and fountains, 25 And cornfields and goodly positions. 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. 29
