Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 The perspicuous Book is witness 2 Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 The command that We have been sending 5 As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. 12 But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, 13 Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? 14 We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. 21 Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” 22 We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. 23 Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." 24 They left how many gardens and fountains, 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
