Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha'. Mim. 1 By the Book that makes things clear; 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 In it every wise matter is determined 4 By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. 7 There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. 9 Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, 10 Covering the people, this is a painful torment. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 Then they had turned away from him (Messenger Muhammad SAW) and said: "One (Muhammad SAW) taught (by a human being), a madman!" 14 We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. 15 On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. 16 ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, 17 "Send the servants of God with me. I am a trustworthy Messenger sent to you. 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” 22 [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! 25 And the cornlands and the goodly sites 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
