Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
HA MIM. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. 3 On that night is made distinct every precise matter - 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. 11 (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. 18 Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority. 19 and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 They left how many gardens and fountains, 25 and cornfields and splendid buildings, 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
