Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha Mim. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. 3 On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. 4 By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), 5 A mercy from your Lord; indeed He only is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no worship except for Him He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” 12 How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, 13 And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." 21 (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 22 (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. 23 “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
