Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
HA MIM. 1 By the clear Book, 2 that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. 3 On that night is made distinct every precise matter - 4 an order from Us. We are ever sending. 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 7 There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! 11 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' 12 How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” 20 And if you do not believe me, [at least] stand away from me!" 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. 23 “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” 24 They left how many gardens and fountains, 25 and cornfields and splendid buildings, 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; 29
