Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha, Meem. 1 By the Clear Book 2 Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. 3 In it every wise matter is determined 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. 16 ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, 17 [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," 18 "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. 19 “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And crops and noble sites 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
