Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha, Meem. 1 By the clear Book, 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night – indeed it is We Who warn. 3 On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). 15 One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! 16 ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them 17 [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," 18 Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority. 19 I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. 20 And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. 21 And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 and good things in which they took delight. 27 Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. 28 Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, 29
