Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night – indeed it is We Who warn. 3 In it every wise matter is determined 4 Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), 5 as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 Saying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust; 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. 20 "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." 21 Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". 22 (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, 25 and sown fields, fine sitting places, 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. 29
