Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
HaMeem 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. 3 on that night every wise decree is specified 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" 12 How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 And if you do not believe me, [at least] stand away from me!" 21 And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' 22 We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night – you will be pursued.” 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. 28 And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
