The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the star when it setteth. 1 This fellow-man of yours has not gone astray, nor is he deluded, 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 It is naught but revelation that is revealed, 4 something that a very powerful one has imparted to him, 5 [an angel] endowed with surpassing power, who in time manifested himself in his true shape and nature, 6 While he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] approached and came closer, 8 until he was two bows' length away, or nearer. 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 His heart did not lie of what he saw. 11 Will you then argue with him about what he saw? 12 He certainly saw him (Gabriel) during his other ascent 13 At the farthest lote-tree; 14 Close to which is the Everlasting Paradise. 15 (This was) when the lote-tree was covered with that which covered it. 16 His eye did not waver, nor did it stray, 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 HAVE YOU, then, ever considered [what you are worshipping in] Al-Lat and Al-Uzza, 19 And Manat the other third? 20 What! for you the male sex, and for Him, the female? 21 Then that is surely a very unjust distribution! 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Can ever man get what he desires? 24 Nay! for Allah is the hereafter and the former (life). 25
