The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the star when it plunges, 1 Your companion did not err, nor did he go astray. 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 It is but a revelation revealed. 4 taught by One who is Stern in power. 5 [an angel] endowed with surpassing power, who in time manifested himself in his true shape and nature, 6 When he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 two bows' length away, or nearer, 9 So Allah divinely revealed to His bondman, whatever He divinely revealed. 10 His heart did not falsify what he perceived. 11 Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? 12 Indeed, he saw him another time 13 At the farthest lote-tree; 14 Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode. 15 Behold, the Lote-tree was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!) 16 his eye swerved not; nor swept astray. 17 truly did he see some of the most profound of his Sustainer's symbols. 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 And subsequently the third, the Manat? 20 Do sons belong to you and daughters to God? 21 That indeed is an unfair division -- 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority. They follow but their fancy, and that which pleaseth their souls; whereas assuredly there hath come unto them from their Lord the guidance. 23 Or shall man have what he coveteth? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
