The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 Your companion (Muhammad SAW) has neither gone astray nor has erred. 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 This is naught but a revelation revealed, 4 One of mighty powers hath taught it him. 5 Endued with Wisdom: for he appeared (in stately form); 6 While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. 7 Then he approached and came closer, 8 And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer, 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 His heart added no untruth to what he saw. 11 What! So do you dispute with him regarding what he saw? 12 And he certainly saw him in another descent 13 at the Lote Tree (Sidrat tree) of the ending 14 close to the Garden of Refuge. 15 Behold, the Lote-tree was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!) 16 His eye did not waver, nor did it stray, 17 Indeed he saw some of the greatest signs of His Lord. 18 (Can anything as such be considered true) of al-Lat, al-Uzza, 19 and the third one, Manat? -- 20 Why - for yourselves [you would choose only] male offspring, whereas to Him [you assign] female: 21 This indeed is an unjust division! 22 They are nothing but some names that you have coined, you and your forefathers – Allah has not sent any proof for them; they follow only guesses and their own desires; whereas the guidance from their Lord has come to them. 23 Or shall man have what he coveteth? 24 But it is to Allah that the End and the Beginning (of all things) belong. 25
