The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the Star when it plunges, 1 your comrade is not astray, neither errs, 2 nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 4 Which one of mighty powers hath taught him, 5 and endowed with wisdom; who in time manifested himself; 6 being on the higher horizon. 7 Then he drew near and drew closer 8 until he was two bow-lengths away or even closer 9 Thus He revealed unto His bondman whatsoever He revealed. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 What! So do you dispute with him regarding what he saw? 12 For indeed he saw him at a second descent, 13 Near Sidrat-ul-Muntaha [lote-tree of the utmost boundary (beyond which none can pass)], 14 Close to which is the Garden of Tranquility, 15 When the lote-tree was being enveloped, by whatever around it. 16 His sight did not waver nor was it unduly bold. 17 Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 And Manat, the third, the last? 20 What! For you the son, and for Him the daughter? 21 That is indeed an unfair division! 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Is the human to have whatever he fancies? 24 All that is in the life to come and all that is in this life belongs only to God. 25
