The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By the star when it sets: 1 That your companion is not confused, nor has he gone astray, 2 And he does not say anything by his own desire. 3 It [the Quran] is nothing but revelation sent down to him. 4 He has been taught (this Quran) by one mighty in power [Jibrael (Gabriel)]. 5 [an angel] endowed with surpassing power, who in time manifested himself in his true shape and nature, 6 While he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. 8 Until a space of two bow (arcs) or even less remained, 9 and revealed to God's servant what he revealed. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 Will you then argue with him about what he saw? 12 Indeed, he saw him another time 13 Nigh unto the lote-tree at the boundary. 14 close to the Garden of Refuge. 15 (This was) when the lote-tree was covered with that which covered it. 16 [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: 17 Verily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord. 18 (Can anything as such be considered true) of al-Lat, al-Uzza, 19 And Manat, the third, the other? 20 Shall you have the male issues, and He the female issues? 21 That indeed were an unfair division! 22 These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 To Allah belongs the Eternal life and the first life. 25
