The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the Star when it plunges, 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he deluded; 2 Nor does he speak out of desire. 3 This is only revelation communicated, 4 One of mighty powers hath taught it him. 5 and endowed with wisdom; who in time manifested himself; 6 While he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] approached and came closer, 8 Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer, 9 so (Allah) revealed to His worshiper (Gabriel) that which he revealed (to Prophet Muhammad). 10 The [servant's] heart did not give the lie to what he saw: 11 what, will you dispute with him what he sees? 12 For indeed he saw him at a second descent, 13 At the farthest lote-tree; 14 Near it is the Paradise of Abode. 15 When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree, 16 The sight turned not aside, nor it exceeded. 17 Verily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord. 18 (Can anything as such be considered true) of al-Lat, al-Uzza, 19 And Manat, the third, the last? 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 This is an unfair distinction! 22 These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Can the human being have whatever he wishes? 24 But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. 25
