The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the star when it plunges, 1 Your comrade erreth not, nor is deceived; 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 4 taught by One who is Stern in power. 5 Lord of power and wisdom. So he acquired poise and balance, 6 being on the higher horizon. 7 Then the Spectacle became closer, and came down in full view. 8 until he was two bows' length away, or nearer. 9 and revealed to God's servant what he revealed. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? 12 And certainly he saw him descend a second time: 13 to the Lot-tree (in the seven heavens) 14 near which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When the lote-tree was being enveloped, by whatever around it. 16 [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: 17 He saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, 19 And Manat, the third, the other? 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 That indeed is a division unfair! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
