The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
I swear by the star when it goes down. 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he deluded; 2 Neither does he speak of his own will. 3 that [which he conveys to you] is but [a divine] inspiration with which he is being inspired 4 One of mighty powers hath taught it him. 5 one endowed with immense wisdom. He came forth and stood poised, 6 being on the higher horizon, 7 Then he drew near and drew closer 8 until he was as close to him as the distance of two bows, or even less. 9 So did (Allah) convey the Inspiration to His slave [Muhammad SAW through Jibrael (Gabriel)]. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 Will you then argue with him about what he saw? 12 Indeed, he saw him in another descent 13 Nigh unto the lote-tree at the boundary. 14 near unto the garden of promise. 15 Behold, the Lote-tree was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!) 16 (His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong! 17 Indeed, he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza? 19 And Manat, the other third (of the pagan deities)? 20 "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" 21 That, then, is an unjust division. 22 These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. 23 Does man imagine that it is his due to have all that he might wish for, 24 Allah's is the last and the first. 25
