The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ When the event befalleth - 1 and there can be no denying its happening, 2 (Many) will it bring low; (many) will it exalt; 3 when the earth will suddenly shake with a terrible shaking, 4 and the mountains are shattered into [countless] shards, 5 So that they become dust seattered. 6 And you will become divided into three categories. 7 Companions of the Right (O Companions of the Right!) 8 And (as to) the companions of the left hand; how wretched are the companions of the left hand! 9 And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race: 10 They shall be the nearest to God. 11 They are in Gardens of peace. 12 A number of the earlier peoples, 13 And a few of later ages, 14 (They will be) on thrones woven with gold and precious stones, 15 reclining upon them, set face to face, 16 they will be waited on by ageless youths 17 With goblets and ewers and a cup of limpid drink. 18 (no brows throbbing, no intoxication) 19 And with fruits, any that they may select: 20 And with flesh of fowls from that which they desire. 21 And (there are) fair ones with wide, lovely eyes, 22 like hidden pearls, 23 [And this will be] a reward for what they did [in life]. 24 No empty talk will they hear there, nor any call to sin, 25 only the words of peace and tranquillity. 26 Those on the Right, how fortunate are those on the Right! 27 [They, too, will find themselves] amidst fruit laden lote-trees, 28 and banana trees, 29 Lengthened shadows, 30 By water flowing constantly, 31 and abundant fruit, 32 never-failing and never out of reach. 33 And raised couches. 34 for, behold, We shall have brought them into being in a life renewed, 35 And have made them virgins. 36 Beloved (by nature), equal in age,- 37 For those of the right hand. 38
