A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say (O Muhammad SAW): "(Yes) verily, those of old, and those of later times. 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
