a large group of the earlier people 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
