These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 But those of the left hand -- how unhappy those of the left hand -- 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 "We have fallen into debt; 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
