a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
