A company of the former peoples 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers, 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
