A throng of the ancients 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Proclaim, “Without doubt all – the former and the latter.” 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
